Universal Music turned to 8 Million Stories to build a widget to showcase the career of artist Sam Smith. 

The Challenge

Universal Music (UM) is the largest music corporation in the world, representing some of the industry’s most famous artists. In 2014, UM approached 8 Million Stories (8MS) with the challenge of building a widget to showcase the evolving career of multi-award-winning artist Sam Smith.

The Strategy

Working in partnership with the international team at UM and Capitol Records, 8MS developed an interactive timeline highlighting Smith’s most memorable moments including TV performances, single releases, award wins and tour dates.

By signing in via Facebook, users could see their own status updates and track what they were doing while Smith was making music history.

The Results

Within one month of going live, the Sam Smith Timeline was used by over 100,000 unique users from over 170 countries. This resulted in:

  • Over 450 Facebook Stories being published via the widget
  • Over 75,000 likes
  • Awarded a special mention for ‘site of the day’ by Awwwards.
