This Week in Digital – 5th August 2016

So, what’s been happening in the wonderful world of digital marketing this week? Let’s not delay. Here are the biggest stories of the moment:

Snapchat Stars Starting to Highlight Ads

Unlike Instagram and Twitter, the rules regarding ads or sponsored posts on Snapchat have always been a little confusing. However, this week, many of Snapchats most followed stars have begun adding #ad, #sponsored and #paid to their snaps.

So, why the change? Well, despite no recent official rulings, many users believe it is important to be transparent with fans and, as long as it doesn’t impede the user experience, these hashtags are a great way of being honest with followers.

Snapchat Releases Geo Stickers

Besides from the ad labels, Snapchat also had a big week announcing the launch of its geo stickers. Although only available to limited users at the moment, these new stickers will be location specific and are designed with each city in mind.

These stickers will only work in specific destinations, showing users geo stickers that represent their current location.

LinkedIn Influencers Can Now Post Videos

The latest news from LinkedIn states that it is taking a leaf out of its fellow social media platforms’ books and beginning to allow video posts.

Its 500 influencers can now post 30 second video clips across the professional networking site, which will appear in newsfeeds alongside shared articles and job postings. Some will hold user generated content and in others LinkedIn will ask the influencer to answer specific questions.

These will be pre-recorded and won’t contain ads.

Research Reveals the Secret Behind Influencer Marketing Success

Recent research from TapInfluence, an influencer marketing automation platform, and research company Altimeter Group has found that ambassadorships are the most effective marketing tactic for 70% of those surveyed.

Product reviews came in close second, with brand mentions and sponsored content also deemed important. And despite affiliate links getting some mentions, they weren’t deemed as the ‘most effective’ method of influencer marketing.

The study also revealed that authenticity, interaction, and relevant content are all key reasons why these influencers have become so successful.

Facebook Testing Mid-Roll Video Ads

Live streams are quickly becoming a popular Facebook feature and the social giant is testing out how it can help brands to use these high viewing figures to their advantage by allowing 15 second ad breaks after five minutes of live streams.

However, these mid-roll video ads from top publishing partners will not appear at the start of streams as Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, says he believes this will ruin the viewing experience.

Twitter Is Improving its Ads Manager

Twitter Ads Manager is making two changes over the next few months. Firstly, custom filtering will be added to Ads Manager to enhance dashboard control. This will help users find campaigns quicker and more easily.

Secondly, Twitter is adding custom metrics to allow more specific monitoring. This will allow you to create multiple pre-sets for easy report building and access.

Instagram Introduces Stories

This week Instagram announced the launch of its new feature – stories. You can read all about this in our blog post here.
